This past Sunday, I was reminded about something I believe: we relate to each other through stories. A couple of my friends and I sat around at fighter practice, telling stories and jokes. We remembered people who were no longer with us, events that took place a long time ago, and changes we recognize in our lives today. We had a great time telling each other stories. It’s what I see as the role of story telling in our lives that keeps me writing: relating to others.
Art is another thing I believe in. I think all humans produce art to some degree. If it’s good enough, we slap a capital ‘A’ on it and put it up in museums. But art with a little ‘a’ is something we all produce. For example, aren’t the doodles around book margins and in notebooks a form of art? How about the extra little dollop on a cookie, or the way some people fold napkins. To me, these are all little ‘a’ art. I believe that art is another way of saying “This is what I was thinking about at this time.” We leave tags and messages to others who might be thinking about the same things, even if they may never see our tags and messages.
Anyway, humans tell stories and create art. I believe that’s part of what makes us human, that and the ability to laugh, speak, and of course, to blush. Now I have to close with a note from Mark Twain who once said that we are the only animal that blushes, or needs to.
Have a great day, tell some stories, doodle, laugh and blush a little. After all, you’re only human.
