We will be so happy when the election is over, because the phone solicitations will finally stop. We have been inundated with phone calls from candidates, both the major parties have called us, and who knows who else. It’s as though we, and only we, can determine this election – all we have to do is answer the phone, take a poll and send in all the money we can spare.
Neither of us answer the phone anymore, we let the machine take any caller who stays on the line long enough to leave a message. Usually, that message is beep… beep… beep… and so on.
There has to be a better way of doing things. I mean, we have walked for candidates, worked on campaigns, and yes, contributed money. So why can’t this be enough? Why can’t someone, somewhere, put a gold star next to our name and a notation saying “These folks have done their bit, don’t bother them.”
As the campaigns wind down, I expect things will get more desperate, but I’m not sure how. I guess we’ll just have to wait until the election is over, and hope we won’t have to wade through pollsters and party hacks who want to get an early start on the next go-round.
